Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder This diagnosis is intended to identify major depression in children, whose symptoms manifest as anger and irritability, rather than anhedonia or sadness. Onset between ages 6-10, but may be diagnosed up to age 17. Not used for children age 5 and under. Moods manifest as chronic irritability and recurrent temper outbursts. The temper outbursts occur 3 or more times per week for at least 1 year, during which time there are no more than 3 consecutive months without symptoms. They are observable by others in at least 2 settings and are severe in 1 setting. Mood is negative (e.g., sad, angry, irritable) nearly every day between temper outbursts. There must also never be a period of expansive mood (hypomanic or manic symptoms), which lasts more than a day and is not associated with developmentally appropriate excitement or agitation. This disorder cannot coexist with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder or if there has been a manic episode. |
